Jason
What’s good. How are you today?
G’Ron
Not too much, just chillen. Grinding as usual.

Jason
Yea, I hear you. Aright, so just so we can get to know you a little bit, where did you grow up. Were you born in Houston?
G’Ron
Nah I was born in Illinois, right outside Chicago. I grew up in Houston though, in the Acres Home 4-4. I moved out of there though, but I still go back all the time.

Jason
From listening to your records, it seems as though you were influenced by many different people. Who did you listen to growing up?
G’Ron
I came up around that Death Row era, like Snoop and Dre. I grew up on that. I was into that heavy. I got some gangsta rap in me, but I do other types of music as well.

Jason
When did you begin to realize that you wanted to rap for a living?
G’Ron
When I was 16. I was always a fan of music. I gotta give everything to my mom. She let me listen to all that Pac and Dre music. Just from doin that from such a young age, there isn’t anything else I would want to do other than rap.

Jason
True. I was listening to your latest mixtape Cream Vol. 5. You got some crazy shit on there. Can you talk a little bit about how you’ve progressed from your first mixtape to where you are now? What’s your overlook on music now?
G’Ron
Man, the first Cream mixtape I did was more of me just having fun and recreating some songs I heard on the radio. I had a whole bunch of tracks and just felt like putting it out. It got some great buzz though. From there I just been killin it ever since. I feel like the progression comes from looking at everything. I think my content has gotten better. You can’t just be one minded. You know, I watch the news, see what’s goin on in the streets and I’ll just start writing about it. I feel like ya gotta be current and be aware of what is going on in the social world. I think some of my old music, it’s still good, but now I’m tryin to fit more of my personality in there so people can see and hear what type of person I am. I also think my lyrics are more catchy now, ya know, they got much more of a flow now.

Jason
Yea definitely. The Scared Money song is pretty crazy.
G’Ron
Haha thank you man. Yea sometimes tracks just talk to me. When I can get in that zone I can just write a track in 3 minutes. It’s great.

Jason
Yea I know what you mean. Sometimes you hear a track and your just like “OH SHIT!”
G’Ron
Haha exactly. Then you just go in and kill it.

Jason
Yea, you also have the song with Brain Angel called “Getting Paid”. That was a real nice song. Can you tell me a little about that?
G’Ron
Yea, that was originally a Trae the Truth and Wiz Khalifa track. It was off of his Street King album. So me and Brian did our own thing on it. My Cream mixtapes are just recreations of industry beats. I don’t put any original stuff on those.

Jason
Where can people find all your mixtapes?
G’Ron
I got all my Cream mixtapes on DatPiff. I’m gonna upload all of my mixtapes onto AWAYENT.com. A lot of people been askin me about it. I got some mixtapes out on some sharing sites like Mediafire. I’m gonna go back and post them all in one place.

Jason
You also got a bit of different flow than most Houston rappers. I would say for the most part, they are moving a bit “slower” than you are haha. You seem to be goin at a 100 miles an hour.
G’Ron
(laughs) Yea a lot of people always ask me if I’m from Houston cuz of my flow. I’m like of course, I grew up in Houston. I grew up on that DJ Skrew and all those guys. Now I’m in the studio with some of these guys I grew up listening to and it’s great.

Jason
So how did you and Brian Angel come together? You’re part of Away Ent. How’d that happen?
G’Ron
I mean that’s like my big brother. I knew Brian way before “Making the Band” or “Day 26”. So after he did that and became very successful he came back to help us out. He was like “Yo, I believe in you. You’re my brother, but I believe in you. I think you can really do something with your music.” So I was like shit, “Lets go!” Haha, lets get it. So we just took it from there.

Jason
Yea and it really takes a true, down to earth person to come back after all of this success to reach out and give back to the family. Ya know to say, “I believe in you. You can do it, so you’re gonna do it.” That takes a special person. Not everyone is like that.
G’Ron
Yea exactly. I watch him all the time and he’s a musical genius. He knows how to do everything. So I just sit back and try to pick up everything he’s doing.

Jason
Yea, maybe you could even pick up some of his singing voice, haha.
G’Ron
(laughing) Yea man I don’t know. I don’t know how good I’d sound singing haha.

Jason
Haha, yea true man. I was watching some behind the scenes videos of you guys in the studio. Who is your engineer that you usually record with?
G’Ron
That’s Bruce Bang. Everyone comes to his studio to record. He’s like the only person I’ll record with. I also have a couple big time producers that are helping me put out my albums.

Jason
What’s it like making music in the studio with these people? From the videos I’ve seen, it seems like everyone’s kinda laid back and just having fun.
G’Ron
Yea man, when we in the studio it’s great. Ya know, there are no ego’s or anything. We all family. We goin in there to create some great music and have a good time. It’s like a family gathering. Ya know, when we’re together, it’s just a good time. We tellin jokes to each other and just enjoying making music. And sometimes, that’s how you create the best music. Just by puttin our heads together and jokin around, we can create some great stuff. Those dudes are my bros. I wouldn’t change nothing, I’m just having a great time.

Jason
How has working with your label mates, including Brian and other rappers make you a better artist in return?
G’Ron
Working with Brian is great. He knows how to engineer, mix, everything. When he’s done recording he’ll basically kick the engineer out of his chair (laughs) and start arranging it himself. He knows what kind of sound he wants. Ya know, he’ll just be like, “I want it like this. No like that. No, do this.” So once he starts doing that, I just pay attention to every knob he’s turning and pressing, just tryin to pick up anything he’s doin. And I also picked up a lot of things from my bro Trae as well. He’s a real big advocate in the community and I really respect that. He was givin turkeys out on Thanksgiving.  I admire that a lot. Ya know, he was out knocking on people’s doors given them turkey’s. That’s a big thing for me. A lot people forget where they come from.

Jason
So can you tell me a little bit about your label- Death Before Dishonor.
G’Ron
Yea, it’s Death B4 Dishonor/Away. We got a little joint venture going on. I got some artists coming, but that’s later down the line. But yea, Brian and I are getting it in so that way we can build a solid ground for both labels. Both squads are crazy. AWAY has got a crazy roster. They have models, singers, actors, everything. It’s a full production label.

Jason
So what else you got comin. I saw you were workin on your album. Can you tell me a little bit about that and anything else you got comin for us?
G’Ron
Yea, the album is actually called “Death B4 Dishonor”. I’m working on my features right now. I definitely got Brian on there, Marcus Manchild is on there, Baby Bash, I got Felony from Swishahouse. There also a lot of other great artists on there too, we just still gotta work out the technicalities and whatnot. We have to get everything situated still. It’s gonna be like an EP, then I’m droppin a full length album in the summer. It’ll be my first project with all original music. I got my video “Monkey Business” which is the first song off the album.  Shout out to Paul Wall, Baby Bash and Pyrex. Free Pyrex, he’s unfortunately incarcerated at the moment. We got some more videos coming. We gonna shoot one for the track called “Like You” with Brian Angel and Baby Bash. I would really like to shoot videos for all my tracks off the EP (laughs). That’s my goal. But yea, I got some features coming, we just waitin to see which projects they are gonna put em on. You can hit me up on Twitter @TheRealGRon. I’m on that shit all the time. It’s so addicting, people hit me up on there instead my phone haha. But that’s about it- go to www.awayent.com and check out our official website. Thanx for talking. Appreciate It.
